About Stephen Frith:

It begins with a toy piano...

Even as a toddler, music was an inseparable part of Stephen's life. He grew up in a non-musical family, but even from age 4, took it upon himself to improvise accompaniments to nursery rhymes on a toy piano bought for him by his parents. This love of improvisation has remained and continues to be requisite in his compositional process.

Early musical enrichment came from local music services and the local church choir, and he started writing down music from the age of 7, winning his first competition aged 14.

At The Minster School, Southwell, Stephen was able to hone his skills in leading and creating ensembles, often involving his having to fill in missing parts. Of note was his playing 3 unfamiliar instruments in a production of 'One Man Two Guvnors.'

He is currently in his final year at Chetham's School of Music, under Dr. Jeremy Pike, student of Henryk Górecki and father of BBC Young Musician winner Jennifer Pike.

Music that connects

Stephen’s music is crafted within the belief that Art Music doesn't have to be detached from everyday listening, and Stephen composes pieces that are accessible yet meticulous in detail and fulfilling to players and audiences. His aim is to build a genuine bond between himself as a composer and his audience, ensuring that performers also find joy and connection in his work.

Versatility and tailored creations

Coming from a former teacher, 'What sets Stephen apart is his remarkable versatility and responsiveness.' He excels at adapting to feedback, whether from clients commissioning new pieces or performers bringing his work to life. His skill set spans a wide range, from arranging for pop groups to writing large-scale orchestral scores and from the intricoces of chamber works, to the fast-moving world of electronic music. Each creation is tailored to its specific setting and audience.

Aside from composition...

Stephen has a speciality in early music, playing baroque cello and bass viol.

In February 2026, he organised a performance of Bach's 2nd Brandenburg Concerto in Carole Nash Hall, and will be performing a program of Bach, Purcell, Eccles, Abel and Poulenc... on the 11th of April.

He is also an able Music director and conductor, having waved the baton in two of his pieces, attended a conducting course and Co-led Minster Melody Makers, an early years choir.

He has Music Directing experience in pop and theatre settings.
